What a binge...

My mother in law called today. Her standard Sunday call. They had a break in the other day. They were home and asleep so I suppose it would be considered a robbery. The target - their deep freeze in the porch. The suspect was described as approximatley 500 lbs, black/brown, furry and very hungry. They live in Kenora and the bears have been causing all sorts of problems this year as usual. This bear almost cleaned out her entire freezer. This is what it ate. Keep in mind this is frozen.

2 whole chickens
1 and 1/2 boxes of chicken breasts
a loaf of banana bread
6 lbs of ground beef
12 chicken legs
a pork roast
a package of hot dog buns
5 loaves of bread
a package of stir fry veggies
1/2 box of freezies
leftover homemade m&m cookies
and a loaf of garlic bread.

She said the only thing left was 6 steaks and 1/2 a box of the chicken breasts. Imagine eating frozen roasts and chickens. Incredible! She said the bears can open cans and tins easily now and recognize it as food. She said the one neighbour had a bear open up 12 cans of beer and drink it. Of course I am picturing the bears opening it normally and sitting around drinking it while shooting the shit. But I think I am getting bears mixed up with my inlaws there. I suspect more beer was spilled then consumed - which maybe means I am confusing the bears with my family. Of course with the amount of food they ate I wonder if anyone left their bong going....

I wonder how the bear felt the next morning. Or that night. I doubt bears have regret over binges unlike us people. They just are. I am guilty of assigning human qualties to animals. I suspect the bear had no guilt or shame. Probably just had a good sleep and started the next day again. I should learn that. I heard a great quote once -and I don't remember who it was who described the difference (maybe Geneen Roth or Harriet Lerner) that Guilt was doing and shame is being. That always stuck with me. Love that quote.

Man, now there is something they don't prepare you for in surviving in the big city 101. Although I am reminded of a guy I dated back in college.

(Just linked here from Suze's blog at Still Baking.)

Cheers,
